Phoenix's Devil & Devil Page - Story Page!
There are spoilers in this document! They are minimal, but it's difficult to tell the story without them. If you want the whole story, though, you should buy the manga...it's worth it! The art is breathtaking and the dialogue is incredible.
In the endless battle between the upper kingdoms and the lower kingdoms, the Devils attacked and, in a fight with the Angels, one named Ios decided to challenge a powerful demon called Sword.
The duel began, and almost immediately, the two came to a cataclysmic point in the fight, and so, weakened substantially, they each took human form to survive, and unfortunately both took exactly the wrong form, each taking one of a pair of twins (not identical, obviously.)
Ios took the form of Kanna Amano, a rebellious punk, and Sword took the form of Souma, his younger brother, a star student and basically a goody-two-shoes. This of course was the source of some confusion and great irritation among the two as they slowly got used to their new roles, adapting them more than slightly to fit their needs.
Nanami quickly found out that things were more strange than they seemed when the two boys returned to school, and soon after, they all met Komorineko, who assisted Sword in defending himself. Soon Sword's demonic powers began to manifest themselves again, and Ios's angelic powers did the same...unfortunately, this brought Sword to the attention of a local exorcist named Mizuno.
However, eventually Mizuno became an ally, and then the group met Ranfuu, an ambitious human with an extremely powerful umbrella and more power than most humans as well. A demon sealer, his goal was to seal a great number of demons and achieve incredible power in doing so. In time he came to work with them, and the group descended into the Devils' realm, for Souma to gain power while Sword was weakened by Ranfuu's mistaken attack.
The group ran into Shiva Garland, and he put a death seal on Souma that could only be removed upon Shiva's death, or so he said...and so Souma worked to master a secret technique to match Shiva's power, and his little sister Lilith helped him along the way; meanwhile, Ios was almost killed by a group of cruel Devils and Kanna manifested as his dominant personality, turning him dark.
Meanwhile, Souma actually mastered the forbidden, secret technique and confronted Shiva, and actually came close to defeating him, but it was revealed that Shiva too bore a death seal, put on him by Lord Satan of the Devils. Shiva sent the group back to Earth and sealed off the gateway to stop Satan, and of course Sword was heartbroken that his friend was, most likely, now dead.
In the midst of the confusion, Ios was brought by Shekil to the Angels' realm and was forced by a superior's command to assert himself over Kanna, who gave his life up so that Ios could watch after Sword. Shekil, who idolized Ios, decided to return Kanna to the living world, and for his defiance was condemned to Earth and decided to watch after Ios and make certain that Sword showed his dear Ios the respect he was due.
After this, Sword decided to make a concerted effort to assemble the 13 shards desired by Lord Satan so that he could regain his true demonic power...
